Tenses adalah perubahan bentuk kata kerja (verb) yang dipengaruhi oleh waktu terjadinya kejadian/peristiwa. Jumlah keseluruhan tenses ada 16, salah satunya yaitu present continuous tense. Berikut ini adalah penjelasan present continuous tense:
Fungsi Present Continuous Tense.
1. Menyatakan hal yang sedang terjadi pada saat ini.
Contoh: I am sweeping the floor right now.
2. Menunjukkan suatu kejadian yang bersifat sementara (temporary action).
Contoh: I am cooking fried rice this day.
3. Menyatakan rencana yang sudah pasti.
Contoh: I am going to the school after breakfast.
4. Menunjukkan realita yang sedang terjadi saat ini (trends).
Contoh: More students are cheating for the exam.
Rumus verbal sentence.
(+) S + To be (is/am/are) + Ving + O
(-) S + To be (is/am/are) + Not + Ving + O
(?) To be (is/am/are) + S + Ving + O ?
(-?) To be (is/am/are) + S + Not + Ving + O ?
Contoh:
(+) Miyais singing loudly now.
(-) Miya is not singing loudly now.
(?) Is miya singing loudly now?
(-?) Is miya not singing loudly now?
Rumus nominal sentence.
(+) S + To be (is/am/are) + 3C (Noun/Adjective/Adverb)
(-) S + To be (is/am/are) + Not + 3C (Noun/Adjective/Adverb)
(?) To be (is/am/are) + S + 3C (Noun/Adjective/Adverb)?
(-?) To be (is/am/are) + S + Not + 3C (Noun/Adjective/Adverb)?
Contoh :
(+) Fitriyah and fidiyaare diligent student.
(-) Fitriyah and fidiya are not diligent student.
(?) Are fitriyah and fidiya diligent student?
(-?) Are fitriyah and fidiya not diligent student?
Catatan:
1. Penggunaan To be: (I=> am), (You, They, We,benda jamak => are), (She, He, It,benda tunggal => is).
2. Rumus nominal sentence simple present sama dengan rumus present continuous, yang membedakan hanyatime signal-nya (waktunya).
3. Time signal yang digunakan adalah now, right now, at the present, this time, this moment, today, at the moment,dll.
