Fungsi past perfect tense adalah sebagai berikut:

1. Menyatakan suatu tindakan atau aksi yang sudah selesai pada suatu titik di masa lalu sebelum aksi lainnya terjadi. Tense ini juga dapat digunakan untuk membentuk conditional sentence tipe 3 dan reported speech.

Contoh: She had finished her homework before she watched TV. (Dia telah menyelesaikan PR-nya sebelum dia menonton TV).

2. Menunjukkan seberapa seringnya suatu aksi terjadi di masa lalu. Tense ini dapat digunakan dengan adverb of frequency seperti never, ever, always, dll.

Contoh: He had never seen such a beautiful sunset before. (Dia belum pernah melihat matahari terbenam yang begitu indah sebelumnya).

3. Menunjukkan suatu keadaan atau situasi yang berlangsung di masa lalu sampai suatu titik tertentu. Tense ini dapat digunakan dengan keterangan waktu seperti for, since, until, dll.

Contoh: They had lived in that house for ten years before they moved to another city. (Mereka telah tinggal di rumah itu selama sepuluh tahun sebelum mereka pindah ke kota lain).
